AMY MILNE...
Why did you start CrossFit?
I have Ankloysing Spondylitis (a type of Arthritis) that affects my sacroiliac joints (hips), lower spine, neck and sternum and can be quite debilitating and extremely painful if I don't keep active and mobile. I started CrossFit after my friend kept telling me how great it was. At first I thought it would not be, something I would be too keen on because I had this idea it was all about lifting heavy weights. However, after seeing the results my friend had gained, in a short period of time and the enjoyment he was also getting out of it - plus his assurances CrossFit is not just about lifting weights and that you can scale the workout to suit your level and capabilities - I decided I would go along to a free introductory class to see what all the hype was about. The class nearly killed me but I instantly loved it and discovered for myself how it was not all about weight lifting. CrossFit is a whole body conditioning work out that is varied, fun, challenging and most of all really satisfying.
What's yours favourite thing about CrossFit?
It's hard to narrow down my favourite thing about CrossFit Canterbury because it's a combination of things that makes it great, including the coaches, the people that go and the way it leaves you feeling after every workout - it's the
best 'gym' I've ever joined.
What's your favourite exercise and WOD?
Favourite excercise would have to be squat clean, there's single one in particular out but I like WODs that combine running, resistance exercises and leave you feeling completely spent (which is pretty
much all of them). I dislike double-unders because I'm rubbish at them and spend most of the time whipping my bum with the skipping rope whenever I try to do them.
Favourite food?
I'm a foodie and love to cook, bake and eat! I can eat quite a lot for a small person so I try to make healthy meals using fresh ingredients and lots of veges. I've travelled a bit in South East Asia and love Asian
infused food - particularly Thai.
Favourite Movie?
Dirty Dancing
What is your occupation/ who do you work for?
I work for the Canterbury District Health Board as their Media Liaison in the Communications Team. I basically am the first point of contact for media and do a lot of work around generating positive news coverage. I also write press
releases, take photographs, write for internal publications, advise/support staff and patients with media responses/interviews, edit copy for advertisements/internal and external communications. It's a busy role particularly with how much the earthquakes have affected the Canterbury
Health System this year.
